Did you know that in three years we have increased spending in Montana by 40% and there are now nearly 800 new employees in State government? Can your business survive with that kind of increase in spending? This growth of government is a recipe for disaster. We have some extremely talented and capable state employees, but did we really need another 800 new hires? A reasonable increase in line with the growth of population and inflation is justifiable but 40% is way out of line. What did we get for this huge growth in Government? We need accountable and responsible spending in government. That is why Roy Brown has proposed the Montana Budget Accountability Commission (MBAC). This will be a commission of accountants, auditors, businessmen and women, legislators on Appropriations and other finance people appointed by the Governor and the Legislature to oversee what we are getting from all this new spending. It puts accountability and responsibility in government. If certain programs are performing well and providing a worthwhile service for their cost, they should receive more money. If they are not accountable and responsible then they should be eliminated. We don’t need bigger government, we need better government.
