Whopper of the Day - July 14th:

the truth about job creation

In a pro-Brian Schweitzer radio ad promoting the Governor’s re-election, Schweitzer claims that Montana is experiencing record job growth with over 1,500 new jobs each month.  However, labor statistics clearly demonstrate that jobs are actually on the decline in Montana, and unemployment is going up.

Schweitzer claiming record job growth

“With Democrat Brian Schweitzer as our Governor, and Republican John Bohlinger as our Lt. Governor, Montana is now on the move.

Record job and wage growth in an economy that’s creating more than 1,500 new jobs each month.”  (Emphasis added

(Pro-Schweitzer radio ad, paid for by the Montana Democrat Party, July, 2008)

Labor statistics show job losses and an increase in unemployment

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that total employment in Montana has actually decreased by 3,000 employed workers over the past year, from 485,846 in June of 2007 to 482,798 in May of 2008.  Over the same period of time, unemployment has increased from 3.1% in June of 2007, to 4.2% in May of 2008.
